The New York Energy Research and Development Authority is hosting the State of the Science Workshop on Offshore Wind Energy. The State of the Science Workshop 2020 Cumulative Impacts to Wildlife will be in Rye Brook, NY on May 5-6, 2020. The workshop will identify key studies that could be conducted in the near future and will assess the knowledge of offshore wind development’s cumulative impacts on ecosystems and populations. January 29, 2020 Massachusetts and Rhode Island Port Access Route Study: Notice of availability and request for comment
The draft Offshore Massachusetts and Rhode Island Port Access Route Study, by the First Coast Guard District in Boston and published in the Federal Register, is now available for comments. The aim of the study, conducted between March 26 – December 15, 2019, was to examine existing waterways and shipping route uses to enhance navigational safety of the area.

January 28, 2020 PETITION REGARDING OFFSHORE WIND PROCUREMENT Authorization for 2020 Procurement
NYSERDA filed a petition to initiate a regulatory proceeding seeking Commission authorization to issue a 2020 offshore wind solicitation. The petition addresses Governor Cuomo’s announcement in his 2020 State of the State Address, that in 2020, NYSERDA should issue its second solicitation for offshore wind facilities to yield at least an additional 1,000 megawatts of clean power.

Significant improvements have been made in subsea cable technology over the past ten years. About 80 percent of all offshore wind insurance claims involve the cables, making it a risky area for offshore wind farms.

January 7, 2020 Cuomo: Create LI institute to train wind farm workers
New York will create a training institute on Long Island for prospective employees of planned offshore wind farms. The state will spend $20 million on the offshore wind training institute, which will be housed at Stony Brook University and Farmingdale State College.

NYSERDA is making available up to $5.5 million to support the collection of geotechnical and geophysical data from areas off New York’s coast that hold offshore wind development potential.

Nexans has initiated a framework agreement with Ørsted and Eversource to provide up to 1,000 km of subsea cables.

November 27, 2019 New offshore wind project will be the biggest in the U.S.
This project off Virginia Beach could have 2,600 megawatts of wind energy by 2026.

November 19, 2019 NJ Boosting Offshore-Wind Target to 7.5 GW by 2035
Governor Phil Murphy signed Executive Order No. 92, which raises New Jersey’s offshore wind goal to 7,500 MW by 2035.

November 11, 2019 Mayflower Wind Officials Excited to Move Forward With Project
Mayflower Wind officials move forward with proposed clean energy project. The wind farm planned for 20 miles south of the Nantucket would generate enough electricity to power about a half million homes.

November 5, 2019 Testing to Begin on Haliade-X 12MW Wind Blade
GE Renewable Energy and the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center have begun a series of fatigue tests on the 107-meter blade in Boston. This blade is to be integrated into the most powerful offshore wind turbine in the industry, the GE Haliade-X 12MW machine.

November 4, 2019 25 MW Floating Offshore Wind Development Coming Online
The Windplus consortium, owned by EDP Renováveis, ENGIE, Repsol and Principle Power Inc., will be installing the largest floating wind turbine in the world. The project will involve three machines with a total capacity of 25 MW. The development is located off the coast of Viana do Castello, Portugal, and will come online at the end of 2019.

November 1, 2019 2020 IPF Call for Workshops deadline is November 1
The Business Network for Offshore Wind’s International Partnering Forum (IPF) workshop is scheduled from April 21-24, 2020 in Providence, Rhode Island.
